The Hogsback outing developed as a free social run through the Cascades forests, with a shorter option for those who do not want the full route. The route varies with conditions and has never depended on formal race timing.
The name comes from Hogsback Ridge in the Ferncliffe Nature Reserve. The tradition reaches back to the early 1980s, while the preserved annual group-photo series begins in 1997.
